About Carlisle
Carlisle is the capital of Cumbria in England's north
west. It is located
at the heart of a rural city-region extending across south west
Scotland, the north Pennines and the Lake District.
It is a city with a population of 100,000. It boasts a 2,000
year history with a wealth of heritage, cultural and tourism assets
including Hadrian's Wall world heritage site, Carlisle Castle and
Cathedral.
Carlisle benefits from exceptional transport links, including three
M6 junctions, the West Coast Railway Mainline and Carlisle
Airport. It is home to world class logistics and manufacturing
businesses and it caters for an extensive range of retail,
commercial and public services. It is also home to the UK's
newest University: the University of Cumbria.
Carlisle is a city with aspirations to grow.
Alongside Carlisle Renaissance priorities,
work is underway on the extension to the city's outer ring road
and a multi-million pound upgrade to flood defences and
sewerage systems. Construction has begun on the
Richard Rose Central Academy - one of two planned for Carlisle -
and improvements to other secondary schools. There are plans to
extend Carlisle College and new sports facilities across the
city.
Carlisle is one of Government's designated
Growth Points and plans are being prepared to increase the
population by over 20,000 in the next 20 years.
This is based on the opening up of new sites for housing
development across the City and major investment in community
infrastructure.
