A vital and vibrant City Centre

The city centre of Carlisle is a focus for shopping, business, culture, leisure and public services, where more than 20,000 people work.  It is a compact, ‘walk-able’ centre with several residential communities and the River Eden, a green corridor with sport and recreational amenities, running alongside it.

The city centre retains much of its historic street pattern, including part of the original city walls and the imposing Citadel, and a central pedestrianised area focused on the Market Cross, often the focus for outdoor events and activities

We need to sustain and develop our city centre offer for residents, visitors and business. We have brought together partners with a stake in the city centre to form a City Centre Partnership which takes the lead in generating new investment in the quality of the public realm, improving access and car parking, promoting the city centre. and creating an environment where businesses chose to invest and can thrive and where more people chose to live.
