Carlisle Renaissance

M6 Corridor

Developing the infrastructure to support growth

Carlisle benefits from exceptional transport links and the quality and extent of its transport infrastructure will continue to play a major role in the area's economic growth. Investment in the West Coast Railway Mainline has improved journey times and the quality of rail services to and from Carlisle. Plans to develop Carlisle Airport will support growth in logistics business, tourism and a range of other business and commercial opportunities.

Carlisle has three M6 motorway junctions and we want to maximise the economic benefits of the motorway corridor for Carlisle.

Kingmoor Park at J44 is Carlisle's biggest employment site, and is set for further growth with the extension to the City's outer ring road (the Carlisle Northern Development Route) though the site. Brownfield land on existing industrial estates clustered around J43 needs to be reclaimed to improve the availability, quality and choice of employment land. J42 is currently underdeveloped and provides an opportunity for a next generation strategic site targeted specifically at the needs of Carlisle's future growth sectors.

We are working with Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council to develop a strategic masterplan for the motorway corridor and support investment in the remediation of brownfield sites along it.
